Out With The Old, In With The New

One thing’s for sure: This year has gotten us all thinking a little bit more about our living spaces, right?

One thing’s for sure: This year has gotten us all thinking a little bit more about our living spaces, right? Since we’re spending the majority of our time at home, many of us are working on design projects we’ve had in mind for a while. Or we’ve developed new ideas during our time indoors.

One thing we really love over at Serenbe is design, and one of our favorite homes was recently featured in Rue Magazine!

“In this house, architect Steve Dray (Serenbe Planning & Design), interior designer Rebecca Cartwright, and builder Lucas Barry played on the idea of a modern ski chalet — the exterior is quite simple, but the inside is cozy and welcoming with tons of texture and interesting decor.”

While a classic, all-white kitchen is very popular and pleasing to the eye, the team over at Rue absolutely loved this kitchen for it’s uniquely-dark features. Interior designer Rebecca Cartwright created refreshing contrast with custom cabinets painted in Benjamin Moore Knoxville Gray and matte black Kohler faucets. Natural light still finds its way in through large windows and white walls, plus who doesn’t love open shelves?

Another lovely aspect of this kitchen has to be the Wilsonart quartz countertops, which Rebecca honed the black quartz to look like soapstone, taking them to a whole new high-end level.

Let nature inspire your design (also known as biomimicry) to bring the outside in. Your mental health will thank you! Photographs of nature or animals, such as the stunning goat photo above, by Serenbe resident Ali Harper Wittorf, or bringing whole plants indoors can bring some life into your space. Think texture, natural colors, shapes and anything that resembles the natural design of our environment.

Again, who doesn’t love open shelves to display all of their treasures? We really love what Rebecca chose to do here with the stacked firewood next to the fireplace and neatly organized books with travel momentos and art displayed. Speaking of the fireplace - have you seen this fireplace?! The sleek, modern design of marble fits perfectly with the rest of the room, adding yet another natural element.

We certainly don’t want you to forget about giving your outdoor spaces some TLC, too. Seating is important, whether you have a front or back porch, fire pit, or lounge area, just be sure to have some nice seating so family and friends can relax in the fresh air (even if it is socially distanced right now). This gorgeous iron swing built by Gault Designs sits comfortably on the front porch for relaxation in style. The industrial aesthetic and circle shape is a real eye-catcher, for sure!
