For The Recovering Thanksgiving Shopper

How to skip Black Friday and still find Serenbe under your tree.

At this time of year, we look forward to time with family and friends. Time to enjoy food and fun with your loved ones. Time to be thankful for all that we have. And also, time to trample your neighbor to be the first to get a brand new TV at 8pm Thanksgiving night.

Wait…what?

Black Friday has slowly crept closer and closer to taking over, to the point where some big box stores open before you’ve even finished your holiday meal. Luckily, we’re finally seeing some pushback to the shopping madness. The last few years have seen two campaigns by national companies that Serenbe is proud to support: Spending time outdoors the Friday after Thanksgiving and shopping local that Saturday.

When REI made the choice in 2015 to give employees a day off on the busiest retail day of the year to #OptOutside, did they know the movement it would inspire? Maybe, maybe not, but it is obvious people are craving the connection with nature (tell us something we don’t know), because now more than 700 organizations and millions of people are joining them.

Here at Serenbe, we’ll take any opportunity to spend some time in the woods. We won’t even have to miss out on our holiday shopping, because Serenbe’s small business retailers will be open on November 30, 2019, for Small Business Saturday. What’s the difference between shopping big box vs shopping small business? Well, AMEX found that for every dollar spent at a small business in the U.S., ~$0.67 stays in the local community!

Another opportunity to keep your dollars in your community and support small businesses at Serenbe is the annual Serenbe Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Local and regional makers sell their homemade, one-of-a-kind items that range from candles and soaps to books and artisanal foods.

There’s also a food truck, holiday craft workshops and seasonal games so you can spend the whole day hanging out and getting in the holiday spirit.

The holiday season at Serenbe is about spending quality time with family members at nature’s doorstep. You won’t see people busting down the doors of our local stores; instead, you’ll see a thriving community with locally- and resident-owned businesses dedicated to celebrating the holidays and connecting with guests.

Come out and support your neighbors: we can’t wait to meet you!
